For a while there was a slight decrease in the number of horses being slaughtered here in the United States. Many people are strongly against the idea of slaughtering horses, but when you stand back and look at the big picture we may actually benefit if we reopened U.S. slaughter houses. Firstly, when people want to get rid of a horse sometimes they send it to auction. Most auctions are not happy places. If you’ve ever been to one, you walk around and notice how fatigued and unpleasant most of the horses appear.
Not Pro Slaughter; Pro Horse Horse slaughter has always been an option for American horse owners; it how has potential to be swept out from under the feet of citizens during this nationwide financial crisis. Many rural communities are feeling the pressure and selling items that they can live without, often times horses are the first to go because they are no longer necessary for agricultural purpose. Additionally, as American citizens, it is highly unorthodox to have to spend hundreds of dollars to get rid of an animal that is unsafe, unwanted, or just underutilized. Furthermore, without the option of canning the animal, horse owners may turn to simply letting the horse loose, which is illegal, and the government will be spending more money on organizations such as “Adopt a Horse,” because they’ll have to take the horses that are let go. It is also true that the US cannot dictate what other countries eat, “if we grew up with cows in our back yards and lived on dog ranches, we would think it was wrong to eat cattle.” Anonymous
One such case is that of Boxer, ‘an enormous beast’ who was ‘as strong as any two ordinary horses put together’. This horse’s own ignorance and loyalty lead to his death at the hands of Napolean, the animal Boxer was most loyal to. Boxer does not enjoy dwelling on his own dilemmas and so allows the pigs to decide for him. Thus he adopts two maxims, ‘I must work harder’ and Napolean is always right’. His stupidity blocks him from realising that he could rally all the farm animals to rebel against the tyrannical pigs.
The general size of Russia meant that most of it was uninhabited due to the poor infrastructure and travel availability, which was restricted due to the roads being mainly dirt which, in bad weather (which was generally most of the Russian climate), the roads would turn to mud and make them completely undrivable. This would mean that keeping in contact with the thousands of state governments and such would be almost impossible, as there would be next to no communication, and if there was, it would arrive weeks late, creating confusion and little advancements. Also, three quarters of the Russian population were peasants, who owned small plots of land, which could be traded and bought by other landowners. However, these were eventually freed, and each owner got a small plot of land and in return, had to pay an amount of money to the government, which meant a lot of small farms were in debt. This meant that the Russian agriculture was poor and the remaining farms used outdated methods and had no advancements for a while, due to illiteracy and such.
In Animal Farm, the author, George Orwell, shows how “Absolute power corrupts absolutely!” For instance, the first sign of corruption is shown by Farmer Jones ill treatment of the animals. He is a drunken man whose life is poorly living. He works his animals to the last pulp, whips them for the fun of it because in his mind he is the one in charge and who they must obey and he feeds them the minimum rations of food. Farmer Jones is neither considerate nor passionate for his animals and it is noticed that he only tends to the animals because of the profit he is receiving. The first thing he does is drink whiskey and polishes bottle after bottle then he attempts to tend to the care of his animals which is performed poorly.
Remarque uses one of the earlier scenes of the innocent dying horses as a symbol of the loss of innocent young men who were torn away from their families. ‘The belly of one of the horses has been ripped open and its guts are trailing out’ (pg 45). Baumer describes the scene of the dying screaming horses in pain and fear, ‘we can stand a lot, but this brings us out in a cold sweat’ (pg 45). Detering who was a farmer back home states ‘what have they done to deserve that’ (pg 45) and ‘it is the most despicable thing of all to drag animals into a war’ (pg 45). When they started to run out of the older boys, they started bringing in younger and younger recruits.
The behaviors of the exotic animals cannot be predicted, one may not order and command their steps each minute and therefore can kill or maim within few seconds. Many people according to studies have been killed and maimed by these animals within seconds. They can be extremely dangerous when provoked. Interference with the natural system As much as all the animals deserves to exist, keeping the exotic animals is taking them out of their natural habitats and may feel like they are lacking something. Keeping them also interferes with them since they are meant to be free and are used to hunting for themselves.
All of which are barbaric. These helpless animals suffer and die in cruel chemical, drug, food and cosmetics tests as well as medical training exercises. Some people believe that if these procedures were to stop, human victims of sickness and diseases would drop dead in droves, however animals rarely serve as good models for the human body. The reality is that the majority of these abhorrent tests do not contribute to improving human health, and the value of the role that animal’s experimentation plays in most medical advances is questionable. In fact many of the MOST important advances in health are attributable to human studies.
They were not given shoes and equipment so many men were fighting without guns or shoes, they didn’t have wagons or horses and not even first aid treatment for wounds. The fact they had no fist aid supplies was bad because many men had there wounds unattended and even worse the soldiers were made to lye on the ground in the dirt, filth and cold without straw. All this ill-treatment eventually led to desertions from soldiers and this was a problem for the government because they were losing men on the front line, and even worse the soldiers were coming back to Russia angry with the Tsar and equipped with weapons. This is a very important factor in bringing about the Russian Revolution of March 1917 because the people revolting in Russia now had the army slowly joining them. The war was not only badly affecting the
It might seem less serious, but that is not the case; it can lead to terrible pain and suffering, and sometimes death. Some examples include starvation, dehydration, untreated infections, inadequate shelter in extreme weather conditions, and the failure to get medical care. Passive cruelty is sometimes due to the owner’s ignorance, so many animal control officers will first try to educate neglectful owners on how to properly care for animals before giving them a ticket or placing them under arrest. The second kind of animal abuse is active cruelty. It is more well know and disturbing.
