The prevalence of child abuse is outlandish. So many children around the world are physically, sexually, emotionally, and mentally abused while in care for their parents. In detail, research shows “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually” (The National Children Alliance). Furthermore, “in 2008 there were roughly 22.9% fatalities” (Barnett, Perrin & Perrin, 2011, pg.147). For this reason, more attention must be brought to the public regarding this matter. Just as the media bring forth the saddening news of various child abuse case, there should be more discussion on prevention strategies and awareness. Alongside this, child protective services need to become more keen to the signs of abuses and the need to intervene appropriately.…show more content…
Not only was the abuse reported to CPS by mandated reporters, but by several family members as well. There were visible marks and as well psychological signs and symptoms of abuse; henceforth, there was more than enough evidence to remove Aniya from the home; but, apparently, CPS did not agree. In fact, the agency confirmed that it had received three calls about Aniya in 2017 and was investigating claims; but, supposedly did not find enough evidence to remove Aniya from her home. How preposterous, how many more reports did CPS need to receive? Did investigators even interview Aniya; or look into the daycare logs? As it is understood, CPS has the duty of investigation, prevention, treatment, and coordination of service. Investigation, as defined by Merriam Webster, is “to observe or study by close examination and systematic inquiry”. Apparently, the caseworker failed to do his or her job proficiently, which may or may not have resulted from a lack of sufficient training. However, this leaner believes that Aniya’s death could have been prevented if CPS would have removed her from the home after receiving reports of abuse from several reliable sources.
