General Purpose: To Persuade
Specific Purpose: To persuade my audience not to speed because of the dangers.
Central Idea: Speeding is a dangerous and expensive aspect of driving.
I. How many times have you been out on a Saturday night, just hanging out with friends, when all of a sudden the driver punches it and takes off as if you were the fire department, responding to a call?
II. Nobody can deny that going fast in a car is fun, however, in recent statistics that were a result of speeding, nearly 42,000 people were killed and nearly 3.2 million were injured at a cost of over 150 billion.
III. From my personal experience I can say that speeding is a bad action in many ways.
A. Today I am going to be explaining why speed is so bad.
IV. It causes car accidents, tickets, insurances rates to rise, and it has a negative impact on fuel economy.
Let’s start with accidents
I. Car accidents are a major problem, and over the past few years, numbers have increased dramatically.
A. Car accidents in general and especially those resulting from driving fast have many undesirable consequences; the most obvious one is losing a life.
B. A person could be risking his or her own life for the sake of a few moments of pleasure.
1. Making a decision to risk your life is one thing, but to risk the lives of others are just unacceptable.
C. A person could keep his life after a car accident, but would cause himself severe injury, such as losing a limb, the ability to not function normally, certain scars on the body, and even disfiguration.
D. According to studies, speeding is the most important factor to nearly 35% of auto accidents.
Next on the list is a ticket.
II. Aside from the safety factor of slowing down, it has also been established that majority of speeders occasionally reduce their speeds after receiving speeding tickets.
