As personality assessment tools continue to grow in popularity both in the workforce and the general population [in particular online users and magazine readers], one must question the validity of these personality assessment tools in which people appear to putting their full-hearted faith into. Nevertheless, the comprehensiveness, applicability, and cultural utility are also worth analyzing in helping to assess the validity of these personality assessment tools. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the strengths and weaknesses of three types or mediums of assessment tools (Myers-Briggs, Rorschach, and those found in popular magazines) used to determine personality(-y,+ies). In addition, a compare and contrast assessment between the personality assessments tools assessed in this paper will be conducted. Myers-Briggs Type Indicator The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a questionnaire assessing personality type. The MBTI is widely used by businesses for human development and leadership training purposes to include areas of: career counseling, pedagogy, group dynamics, employee training, marketing, leadership training, life coaching, executive coaching, marriage counseling, Workers' compensation claims and personal development. (Reiss Profile, n.d.). In fact, the MBTI appears to be so useful to the business that Patrick (2001) states, “many of the challenges facing the accounting profession is accountants personality characteristics.” A small amount of published research has been conducted in accounting using the MBTI, which suggests the MBTI reliably measures personality characteristics predicted by Jungian theory (Patrick, 2001). However, academic psychologists have criticized the MBTI because of the lack of scientific validation for the 16 personality types. (Reiss Profile, n.d.)
