It brought a lot of jobs to the west and also brought immigrants. When the gold rush first started people flocked to California to get a part in the rush. The strongest men from every city left their homes to find wealth. The people who made it to California first found plentiful gold, but it was hard work, and there were many people trying to get the gold. Immigrants form all over the world came to find instant wealth, so during the rush California became the most diverse state in the country.
During her early teens she was forced to go to boarding school not only by her mothers will but by state law all Indian children were forced away from their parents and sent to Christian boarding schools to acculturate these children through these cultural modification policies, (Bodley, 1999, p. 93). Despite the aims of the laws passed to send Indian children to Christian boarding schools, this actually caused resistance in many cases, as is the case with Mary Crow Dog. The pressures and punishments delivered by these Christian caregivers exacerbated the situation which pushed her to embrace her Indian roots and learn her peoples culture, language and
As the French Jesuit missionaries voyaged through the lands of the Huron Indians they experienced many hardships and obstacles that would set back their goal of converting the savages to Christianity. The film Black Robe does an amazing job at portraying these missionaries, and the obstacles that they faced. The main character Father LaForgue, who is a French Jesuit missionary (Black Robe), is set off on a voyage approved by Captain Champlain to travel up the St. Lawrence River and reestablish contact with a Jesuit mission in Huron territory. LaForgue is accompanied by another French Jesuit named Daniel who someday hopes to be a priest himself. Also, an Algonquin Indian named Chomina, whose services are bartered for items such as pots,
They felt the Native Californians were pagans who were desperately in need of conversion to Christianity for the salvation of their souls. This conversion was a high priority and was accomplished through baptism, instruction in Catholic rituals, moral education, inclusion into the mission community, and enforcement of strict discipline. The Indians were worked hard and paid little. The missions were dependent on native labor to construct buildings, tend the crops, care for the animals and produce goods. The Spanish saw the native neophytes as little more than slaves, who cost nothing to acquire and nothing to maintain.
Secularization among the Missions was happening while Indian population was decreasing due to the “white mans disease”. Indians would run away and be hunted down by soldiers. Men and women were split up into separate dorms and forced to work 6 days of the week. The Indians freedom was delayed and so became a revolution. 10 years after the missions were disbanded the converted Native Americans formed new town and were considered to be loyal farmers and ranchers.
The lasting effects of mission stations may never be completely understood. However; the destruction of Indigenous languages, banning of cultural practices, and separation from family members are just a few of the devastating outcomes the Aboriginal people were faced with. Most mission stations were created with the purpose of changing the Aboriginies whole way of life. Government officials and church officials hoped that through providing a place to live and food rations the Aboriginies would become civilised Christians who were well educated in the Western values and lifestyle. The offering of food and shelter was sometimes and incentive for Aboriginies to go onto mission stations as they were being pushed more and more off their lands by settlers.
The first wave of Chinese Immigration was spurred by the Gold Rush of 1849 in California. Similar to other foreign gold-seeker, those Chinese immigrants came across the Pacific Ocean looking for Gold. Also, in 1850s, there was a civil war called TaiPing Rebellion going on in China that was tearing the country apart. Many people survived from
Most indigenous people were treated unfairly or poorly and worked long, hard hours. During the earlier years of conquest, the colonial church was still a whole. The church organization had created two distinct branches, secular and regular clergy. This would then be spread around the word of Christianity to save souls. By incorporating this belief into the inhabitants, the indigenous people would then believe their way of living was wrong and
One conflict was the gold rush of 1849, where some gold was found in what is now California, and millions of settlers went west to get rich on gold, and in the process fought with the Spanish who lived out there, and then killed many Indians who also settled in that land. After California was bleed dry, the settlers thought maybe the neighboring states would have gold, which lead to another gold rush in Colorado in 1850, Idaho and Montana in the 1860, and Arizona and Nevada during the 1870's. Even though gold really wasn't found in those states other minerals where found like silver in those states, which made the West one of the worlds largest reservoirs of precious metals. Plus the Indians where pushed aside for the railroad expansions, the railroads where away to expand west and do it quickly, as opposed to traveling by horse and wagon, or by walking even in some cases. In most cases, the people who traveled West for precious metals would usually travel back
Our sheriff’s office is in a constant hiring cycle due to many officers retiring, resigning each year and new positions, there are almost always vacancies, which means there are ample opportunities for you to get hired. However, there is a new generation moving into law enforcement. As baby boomers retire, many leadership positions are opening up. Yet, there is no one to fill these leadership positions, either because the current force does not have the skills or training necessary or because the positions are unwanted by millennials who would prefer to avoid the responsibility of captains and other higher ups
