Muntianov Professor Steinke ENC1101 15 September 2014 Causal Analysis Many people have their own beliefs on what is important for their personal protection. Some believe that their protection will come from buckling their seat-belt. Others believe that in-order to be protected they need to be wearing a helmet when they ride their bicycles/skateboards/roller-blades. Wearing your seat-belt and wearing a helmet are very important procedures that people should do in-order to be protected from aspects of life in those situations; however, they’re not the only ways. What seems to be the most important aspect of personal protection is self-defense. Many people own guns and even carry them on their person. Others carry pepper spray in their bags, and others have a sharp object such as a knife in their pocket. What I believe to be an important aspect of personal protection is that I feel that I could defend myself, which is why I carry my pocket knife on my person or in my car. The effects of me carrying a pocket knife may vary depending if others know I have it or not, but the main effects are that I feel safe, I could defend myself whether or not the person knows I have it or not, and having a knife in-general is useful in any situation. Carrying a pocket knife on my person may not be as powerful as carrying a gun, but it does still gives me a sense of safety. Having a sense of safety while walking around a crowded area or alone at night can prove to be very useful. If you feel safe, then you will feel confident. If you feel confident about yourself and about your situation, then you will be less likely a target of a mugger. An attacker is more likely to go for someone who is scared of their own shadow rather than someone who looks like they know where they are going and what they’re doing.
