Never Too Late For College Never Too Late For College Latisha Pearson Eng. 121 – English Composition 1 Michelle Pinkard September 8, 2011 Never Too Late For College 1 My reason for enrolling in college after 21 years is probably just like everyone else. I decided to attend Ashford University to better my life for my children and me. My main objectives are to receive a B.A. degree in Business Administration and open an affordable daycare center for low income families.
Here is my education experience in my life time, and how I plan to use my education to better my life. Formal Education Experience My formal education began in Kindergarten when I started attending Wisconsin Hills Elementary/Middle School. At the time Wisconsin Hills was a K-8th grade school so I had to tough it out with all the big kids. After two years at Wisconsin Hills, the grade school moved out and took up residence in a newly renovated school named Swanson Elementary. This is the school I remember most when I think about the beginning of my academic career.
In the past few years I probably say I have referred to this statement "I need to go back to school" a thousand times. As time flies by and things never seem to change all that I have accomplished is how to be a stay at home mom and some work ethic. Not to mention three great kids and awesome friends. About twelve months ago I really started thinking about going back to school. I so many people tell me where to go.
Throughout my twelve years of school there have been four teachers that have really stood out to me, and I hope to impact my students’ lives as much as they have mine. When my mom and I moved to Franklin, she worked at Needham Elementary School. Miss Marchant was a first grade teacher there, and she is the very reason why I want to be an educator. Ironically, I never had Miss Marchant as a teacher. Instead, everyday after school I went to her room to help her do anything she needed.
My mother decided to homeschool me; I am the first in my family to pursue higher education. This makes taking on this pursuit somewhat scary. Even so, I love learning. Because of this love of learning, I am still enjoying the process even though I am apprehensive and intimidated. Albert Einstein said, "Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death."
Therefore, we should encourage all young individuals to pursue a college education after high school. Mike Rustigan states that “not everyone needs to go to college and most kids’ just want to work with their hands,” and this is slightly true because everyone has a different learning style. It is in their best interest to learn in a manner that will help them succeed. This hands-on experience can be gained through college at a trade school. For example, my friend dreams of owning her own bakery in the future.
I was at the top of the world when I knew I got the course. I hope that I can become a professional and certified counselor. Besides that, I wish that I can further my study in USA and get a PhD in Counseling. Before entering university, I used to work during the school holidays. I started to work since I was 14 year-old.
I see my friends getting good jobs and pursuing their education and I was a sixteen year old mother with nothing to look forward to. My life have change so much and my goal was to go back to school and complete my education. For the past three years my mother and brothers always encouraged me to continue where I left off. Finally one day I decided to reapply to a secondary school to complete in education. I try looking for a job first to take care of my daughter and pay for my finances but that wasn’t successful.
This is half of who my child will be. P2 I agree with Joan Ryan’s statement “It is the acknowledgement that parents are the ones choosing, and then guiding their children through the outside environment“. The parental figure has so much influence on the path that their child will take through life. For example I was hell bent on not going to college for a year after I graduated from high school I just wanted to get a job and have fun. My Mom made a completely different decision for me, and guided me to college.
I married and started my family young like my mom. Both of my parents were hard workers and that never missed a day unless they were really sick. I have developed that same work ethic. I saw my mom go back to school when I was little to earn her degree so I knew going to school at any age was an option. I want my kids to know that it’s good to have dreams and goals at any age and they can have the life they want and deserve
