In the beginning of the book, when Dave talks about when the family was once good, he calls his mom, “Mom”. He later on calls her “Mother” when she becomes abusive. He does this because he became distant from her when the abusive started. He didn’t feel safe referring to her as mom anymore because she wasn’t the nurturing mother that she once was. Before the abuse, Mother would’ve done anything for her family.
‘“You can’t just live like this”, I said. “Why not?” Mom said. “Being homeless is an adventure”.’ Even though Walls knows her parents made the decisions that led them to where they are today, she feels unhappy for them. Walls began to realize that her parent’s decisions weren’t the best for her family, and she began to have mixed feelings for what she needed to do. ‘“Mom, you have to leave Dad”, I said’.
In many families there are conflicts or disagreements. Daisy Fae had a conflict with her family over Jay Gatsby. Daisy loved him, but her family didn’t want her seeing him again because they didn’t approve of him. It quotes on page 73 ‘She was eventually prevented, but she wasn’t on speaking terms with her family for several weeks’. This shows that although Daisy loved him she chose her family over him even though she wasn’t very happy with the decision.
When Katie comes to Southport she does not want to interact with anyone after suffering through long years of marriage with Kevin. Alex was able to relate to her feeling of wanting to be alone, as he tells her that ‘“You want to prove you can make it on your own right?...’ ‘After my wife died I was the same way”’ (71). After Katie saw that Alex had gone through a rough past, similar to her she was able to talk about Kevin with him. Alex explains how after Carly passed, “For a long time….Even if I did want something I wouldn’t have known how to ask, but most of the time I didn’t even know what I wanted’”(71). Both characters had become isolated from society, and really did not know that they needed people to support them, until someone else put in the effort to connect with them.
I felt like giving somebody a buzz. I left my bags right outside the booth so that I could watch them, but as soon as I was inside, I couldn’t think of anybody to call up... Then I thought of giving Jane Gallagher’s mother a buzz and find out when Jane’s vacation started, but I didn’t feel like it. Besides, it was pretty late to call up. Then I thought of calling this girl I used to go around with quite frequently, Sally Hayes... but I was afraid her mother’d answer the phone” (59) Holden knows he wants to call someone, but ends up interdicting all his options. The proof is evident as with every name Holden thinks of, he can find a good reason in his opinion not to call them.
Curley’s wife has no love for her husband and wished to leave him, but her final escape route is blocked since her father is deceased and her mother doesn’t want her. Curley’s wife tries to find companionship with the other men on the ranch but they ignore her or try to brush her off fearing if that they are caught associating with her, they will lose their
She is hiding it from her husband because he didn’t let her write anything or do anything, because in Victorian times, women had less opportunity than men. Also women had to listen to what their husbands said as they were the heads of the house. The husband didn’t believe his wife which shows gender role and creates marital problem when he come to know that he was wrong about not believing her and she was mentally
She did, but it was half-hearted and she herself said it wasn't the truth. She had loved Tom when they'd married, she said, but she'd loved Gatsby too. He lost her to Tom again because he pressured her. She was weak and endlessly dependent and Tom was stabile. Either she was too weak to figure out her situation, or a lifetime of having everything handed to her made her simply not want to.
This therefore can explain the choice of words – however it isn’t funny justified; he is also aggressive. However he may also be telling off Lennie because he likes her, but this is more of a guess; he may in a way be getting defensive, so that Lennie stops looking at her and then he can try himself. This once again proves that she is though negatively against amongst the men. Up to this point we haven’t seen much of Curley’s wife – therefore she has just been referred to as ‘Curley’s wife’; also she has only been married two weeks, so they may not have been properly introduced to her or even know her. This suggests how little respect women were given in that particular time period; Curley’s wife is a woman, and therefore not good enough to have an actual name.
Marla: All I remember from my childhood is hearing my mother yelling through the walls that I shared with them, or seeing her with a black eye or broken arm and not being able to take care of me; while my father takes off for couple of days or a week. I cannot recall ever having a family dinner with my parents that was argument free and heard laughter. Clinician (Dardree): How was the relationship between your parents? Marla: The relationship between my parents was toxic, but my mother loved him a lot. Now that I’m older, I think about it and still cannot understand why she did.
