Personal Model of Helping In choosing a personal model of helping clients assessing the pros and cons were considered before making a decision. Theories of counseling and psychotherapy provide several distinct uses for clinicians. In choosing one or more personal models of helping is based on this writer’s foundation and understanding of each model. Personal models should provide an underlying set of ideas, which are organized for identifying disorders in clients and establishing a treatment plan, or goal. This view point stems from discoveries revealed from training and work history. Having knowledge and experience helps the counselor evaluate theories as they are use in treatment with clients. Washton (n.d.), “….This approach integrates psychotherapeutic and coping skills-training techniques with abstinence-based addiction counseling. The primary goals of treatment are to enhance and sustain patient motivation for change, establish and maintain abstinence from all psychoactive drugs…” (Approaches to Drug Abuse Counseling ). These theories assist counselors in communicating plans coherently of treatment goals for clients. A counselor may have many thoughts, ideas, or feelings about why clients seek therapy and how clients can learn to change. However, having a model or models as a guide can lead to success with treatment ideas for clients. More important, models are scientifically researched and have sets of values about why clients come to therapy and how clients can change. The educational path this writer explores requires studying helping skills and an in-depth look in to different models and goal of models. It is important to train as a professional learning the skills needed to assist clients.
