“To realize one’s destiny is a person’s only obligation.” A powerful statement conjuring treasures and dreams, and the underlying cause for all adventure. To realize one’s destiny, one must follow their personal legend. As I see it, a personal legend is a desired dream that ignites enthusiasm in its follower. It is a path that is inconspicuously laid out through subconscious interests and desires bound in our DNA; it cannot be created nor found. In the face of defeat, greed, desire, hardship, or happiness, our personal legends still prevail, unaltered by any environmental stimuli.
; Questions that can not be answered, even with modern day technology, the aid of science and the ever-growing knowledge of the world; but answers that nonetheless are needed to make sense of and give meaning and purpose to life. The origin of all religions is connected to the timeless search of our existence to humankind. One of the most significant ways in which religion creates meaning for its followers is through the understanding of the purpose of mankind. E.g. Death is understood as the end of mortality, but what people believe comes after varies with each religion.

Prophecy Would it be convenient to have someone who could foretell you’re fate? In both Oedipus Rex and The Matrix, the main characters consult with oracles to guide them on their journeys to self-development, and walk them down their path. Neo and Oedipus believe they know everything there is to about themselves, but later use the guide of their oracle to find out the whole truth. Oedipus from Tiresias and the Oracle of Delphi, and Neo from the Prophet he contacted in The Matrix. The main question that the characters should ask themselves is, would there still be such a miserable outcome if they hadn’t visited the oracles in the first place, and they were left unknown of their fate?
Thesis: The theme of spirituality is strongly intertwined with the very idea of a “Personal Legend”. A Personal Legend can be defined as the purpose of a being's life. In a spiritual sense, one’s purpose in life is to come closer to God. In the novel, Santiago’s Personal Legend in a superficial sense is to travel desert to get treasure. However, as the books plays out, the realization grows that the gifts that Santiago gains are everything but the actual treasure chest.
Equiano and Rowlandson’s religious values were likely the most important factor in keeping their moral spirits up during their time in captivity. Firstly, when Equiano describes his life he states, “As to religion…there is one creator of all things, and that he lives in the sun, and is girded round with a belt that he may never eat or drink…” Equiano is explained how the how the people in his Native country view God and view religion in general. This is extremely important because it is stated very early in the book and the reader knows that Equiano has some kind of religious background. In addition, Mary Rowlandson’s faith in God and religion was shown when she said, “God was with me, in a wonderfull manner, carrying me along, and bearing up my spirit, that it did not quite fail.” She said this during a time in the book when she is in a state of great sadness. She had just been separated from her family and her daughter Sarah had died at the hands of the “savage” Indians.
