My 2nd practicum placement is where I give care directly to the patient. I take the patient’s vitals signs, I prepare and administer the medications, I assess the patients for irregularities and I feed and clean them. My first week started with just one patient to take care of, in between those times I try to help out my primary nurse whenever I can. My primary nurse is responsible for 4-6 patients on any given day and so I try to lessen the nurse’s burden by helping out. From my perspective, on some of the ‘routine’ things that needs to be done for the patient, it is just simply done.
I act as I’m taking a shower. She smiled and me and I new already that she understands me now. She said “oh, yes, take me to bath please”. After this situation I reported in a care plan and a communication book that all the staff members should try to use verbal and non verbal communication together to communicate effectively with Mrs J. I spoke to my senior and then to Mrs J family member about other methods of effective communication with this individual. Sister of Mrs J said that Mrs J has a good eye sight and it wold be a good point to write a notes for her.
| Why Nursing? Writing Assignment Justin Bluff Spartanburg Community College People who work in healthcare are a different breed from the average person. For the most part their patience is endless, their determination to manage some of the worst situations we could imagine is incredible, and that internal drive to care for their fellow man knows no bounds. I truly believe nurses aren’t made there born with the instinct to help others and satisfy their drive to be the best that they can in helping lives. That’s the person I want to become, giving me the opportunity to care for others and be a source of information and education for people who desperately need to make a life style change.
In my nursing class, I learned that doctors cure the sickness and nurses cure the patient. This means that the nurse attends to the physical, mental, and psychosocial aspects in the care of patients. Some days can be demanding on the mind and body, but you can still go home and be grateful of what you have done for someone else. I believe that the core of nursing is love and passion for others. Without this love and passion, why is one in nursing.
I try to be caring and kind with my patients and families. I have learned to put aside my judgments about people and instead take what time I can to talk with them. I learn about whom they are and what it is they want or expect from their healthcare experience. Cultural competence is not only the understanding of different cultures and socioeconomic classes but the ability to treat each of these groups with the same amount of care. I believe further education of me could only benefit my patients and their families.
In addition, I was trying to meet best practice standards, develop effective time management skills so my twelve-hour shift did not become a fourteen-hour shift, and often handling life-threatening situations. The epiphany I had about nursing theory was when I realized I had actually been applying Dorothea Orem’s Self-Care Theory to my practice and had not even realized it. This epiphany came when I was listening to a discussion at one of my healthcare facilities’ quarterly nursing summits. The presentation was about the importance of relating Orem’s Theory to nursing practice and the results of evidenced based practice of Orem’s Self-Care Theory. I realized at that moment that her nursing theory was not as
One of the advantages of becoming a registered nurse is based on the shortage. The problem of the nursing shortage is expected to intensify over the next fifteen years, due to the “baby boomers” are aging and with the elderly living longer, nurses will be even more in demand in the coming years. There is a steady decline in the availability of nurses as they go off the point into different occupations or do not even consider nursing as a career option. According to a report conducted by the Health Resources and Services Administration, thirty states are currently suffering due to a lack of nurses being able to fill positions. The overall look does not look promising for the state of health care in the United States.
My values will always consider patient first, for me patient’s need and interest is always my first priority, therefor altruism is greatest value for me as a part of nursing. I want to be a selfless nurse for whom patient’s priority is always first. Nurses always act as a pillar of support for the people who are sick and vulnerable, I want to be that pillar of support. My belief is that nurses are healers; I will consider myself being accountable and responsible. People trust and depend on nurses, and I will have the ability to win their trust and become their healer.
like any other x-ray scenario, make sure I am familiar with the equipment prior to going into surgery and get familiar with the types of surgeries I will be doing. I think once I get out and start working my O.R. anxiety will go away once I start working. My strengths are that I am a hard worker in the clinical setting I was always willing to do whatever they needed me to do and I was willing to take constructive critic on how I can become a better tech or even on how to manage my time when doing different procedures on the same patient. I
At the Long Term Care where I worked as a student nurse, they didn’t have as many residents as the Heimstead Lodge where I also worked as a student nurse and many health care aids ended up going home because there wasn’t enough work to go around. Another negative experience that I faced when working as a student nurse was now the employees, especially the health care aids treated me. They would come up to me at times and tell me that there was a problem or that I was doing something wrong or tell me that one of my fellow student nurse should be looking after their client. This happened at the Heimstead and soon after, the student nurses, I and our instructor moved on to the Long Term Care and the reception we got was amazing. The head of the facility greeted us and gave us a tour of the facility and told us that if we didn’t have
