My Personal Essay
I once read, on the front of a T-shirt the statement “I touch future”, and I did not quite get the understanding of the T-shirt until I read the back which read “I teach”. At that moment I thought how profound; this was a true statement. What other profession can claim that they have taught Presidents, World Leaders, Movie Stars, Doctors, Lawyers, Business Owners, Star Athletes and Teachers?
My desire to become a teacher has been with me for over 20 years; however life circumstances did not allow me the opportunity to take the time to pursue my life’s passion. After many months of contemplating what career path I wanted to pursue, I decided I would take the opportunity now to pursue my teaching degree. In life sometimes you have to take the opportunities rather than wait for them. Shortly after that, while at church the Coordinator for the Children’s Ministry asked me to step in because a teacher needed to take a leave of absence. I thought wow, how ironic to be asked to do this just as I had made up my mind to go back to school to become a teacher.
I am now in charge of the third and fourth grade students in my church’s children ministry; it averages out to about 15-25 children per week. The joy I get watching these children grow on a weekly basis is phenomenal. In the beginning I had one student in particular that was very withdrawn from the class and considered to be a “trouble maker” by other teachers in the ministry. I pay close attention to that student, because in him I see myself looking in a mirror when I’m in the classroom. Each week I am faced with a new challenge and both he and I grow from the experience. I have thought to myself on several occasions, if I had a teacher when I was his age that understood and took to the time to understand me how different my life would have turned out.
