Personal Challenge Paper 2/16/12 Carla Burk Wellness Class When I signed up for this Wellness class, I saw on the syllabus that I needed to do this assignment. I really had been planning on quitting smoking, so I thought of this as the perfect opportunity to give it a try. On January 1, 2012 I began this journey and I have invited you on part of this journey with me. In this paper, I will share with you what I have learned about myself and the experience thus far I have had while working toward my goal of being smoke-free. I have always worked in Health Care and have always known the importance of being smoke-free for my health as well as my patient, however, I just couldn’t seem to ever make the commitment to myself. As I have shared on the attached journal, this experience thus far has not been an easy one. It has been a month and a half and I still have the urge to smoke however, I am also still smoke-free. This is a huge accomplishment and one I am proud of to this point. I am a very dedicated individual, therefore, I believe I can accomplish this goal as well and check it off my list forever. Who knows what the outcome will be as we do not have a crystal ball to look down the road, however, I hope for my health’s sake alone that I succeed. When I looked at the Prochaska Model, I realized that subconsciously I had gone through all of the steps that are a part of this model already. In the Pre-Contemplation stage I had already been doing Environmental Re-evaluation with my family and friends. In the Contemplation stage I had one particular role model whom I had admired who was encouraging me to quit. In the Preparation stage I had much respect for two different people whom I had watched with their own commitments and kept them in some pretty amazing circumstances.
