Introduction In today’s society, smoking has become a pastime for members of both sexes. The society on a whole abhors smoking especially because of the ill consequences that can occur as a result. Many individuals however smoke to relieve stress, to relax or just out of curiosity. Few stop to really consider the adverse effects that can result from engaging in this activity. Many individuals either smoke tobacco, cigarettes, and marijuana. Most of these smoking agent are addictive and as a result persons find it difficult to break from the habit. The more chronic the use, the more dangerous the addiction and the adverse effects smoking cause. Apart from being a nuisance to non smokers, smoking results in major damage to the internal organs of the human body, including the lungs and heart. It also affects the blood vessels causing vaso-constriction and can be fatal for hypertensive patients. This research is conceptualized to ascertain the perception of the effects of smoking among active and passive student smokers at the University of Technology, Jamaica. There are reported cases of asthma attacks and cardiac arrest in patients who smoke and those exposed to secondhand smoking in public places. Many active smokers are not aware of these effects while others are, but choose to ignore them due to the pleasures derived from smoking. Passive smokers may be aware but feel they have no control over the situation. The topic was peruse to increase the public’s awareness about the dangerous effects of smoking, therefore, effecting changes in the smoking habits of individuals.
