Many of these women were married very young, out of high school or just out of college, and they never really were on their own. They were used to being financially dependent on their husbands and did not know how to support themselves after a divorce. Since the divorce laws in those days also favored the men, many women opted not to take up an already lost battle. However, a lot has changed since those days. Not only is divorce more accepted today by the society, but also women are much more financially liberated.
Conjugal roles are the roles that are performed by the husband and wife and can be either joint or segregated. They say that by the late 1970’s joint conjugal roles were common and that this had allowed the emergence of the ‘symmetrical family’. They said that with spouses sharing work and leisure, there is greater equality. Young and Wilmott also touch on the idea of decision making within the relationship, an area often spoken about by Edgell. Edgell says that women do most decision making frequently on a probably daily basis, but their decisions go unnoticed whereas men make fewer decisions more infrequently but they seem to be the more important decisions such as moving house or buying a car or other serious financial decisions.
While specific symptoms may or may not change, clients at least begin to see themselves as more OK, more deserving, more capable. The problem with therapy is time. With increasing health care and financial needs, and the changes in family and peer relationships, older adults have a difficult time with their self-esteem and acceptng their life in this final stage. There is hope, however, for the people in late adulthood. If they continue to remain active in social, political, and occupational settings, the will keep their sense and role in society. * * Social and Role changes * In the United States, there are negative views about growing older. “However, people in many other parts of the world think and feel positively about aging and assign a positive value and meaningful role to the aging members of their communities” (Williford, 1998, p.4).
Our roles have been to become more equal through various means and matters. In today's society men may help with house work and women are having full time careers to help support their families. There is less of an idea that men are the only bread winner in the house hold, as well as women tending to only house hold matters. Now the two roles are more shared. Women are now accepted into traditionally labeled male occupations, and men are being more accepted in traditional female roles.
It occurs equally in men and women, usually in early to middle adulthood (WebMD, 2012). A person who desires the acceptance of others and is also attached to another is what would be described as an individual with Dependent Personality Disorder. This individual diagnosed with this disorder would find it hard to make their own decisions, have issues accepting criticism, and have little to none self-dependency of their own. These symptoms help explain why Susan Smith may have had the ability to live a normal life because she was pleasing others, which lead to her taking the life of her children to please another man. Susan Smith thought she was being raised by two loving parents, but it turned out to be with a mother that was blind to the fact that her daughter was being abused by a man that played the part of daddy.
Week 7 Assignment 2 Through history women and the GLBT, community has been looked down upon as inferior to men. As time has proven to be a good thing for women especially the last decade because it has been a time of great advancement for women in the workforce and the outlook that society has on them. I think that people in the United States are also becoming more comfortable with the GLBT community. More people are able to express themselves for who they really are and people are becoming more open to the idea of love without limits. I think it is important to look back from where we have come and see the progress that is being made from where we started to where we are today.
They are able to do this by themselves now. Women can now also choose to be more selective about who their spouse is going to be. Again, this being related to the fact that women are able to earn just as much, if not, more than men now a days. What is the cause of this change? In our society genders roles have become less important to a typically married couple. In this day in age you see women who are unwed with children playing both gender roles and vice versa for men as well. Although gender roles in a marriage are important, you will find that over the years a marriage is more teamwork, not specially a gender role. For instance, in the past society saw the man to be the one to take the leadership role in a marriage, presumably playing an active part in making decision for the household and ensuring that the expenses were taken care of. The woman on the other hand was expected to play the loyal role to the husband, supporting him in the decisions made and the accomplishments the man made that ensured prosperity in the home.
