There is no influence in a teenager’s life that is as powerful as peer pressure. At its greatest it can trigger her energy, motivate her to strive for success, and stimulate her to follow a good group of friends. But at its worst, peer pressure can cause risk-taking behaviors, and impair good judgment, hauling the teen away from her family and positive influences and captivating her into doing dangerous activities. Such dangerous activities include smoking, drinking, drugs, and violence. When such behaviors greatly influence a teen, the long term effects take a toll on the individual. Peer pressure during the teen years can have a negative impact upon their health later in life. In a peer pressure survey, statistics have shown astonishing results. 49% were pressured into doing something they knew was bad for their health, and 51% were pressured into doing something they knew was illegal. In other responses referring to how peer pressure has affected their life about 30% said they did drugs, bulimia, underage drinking, became more self-conscious, sometimes felt down about themselves and haven’t been themselves, got dragged into stuff that they didn’t think was right, became depressed, and other got affected in a negative way. Granted, this kind of peer pressure can definitely affect one’s health when associated with drugs, alcohol, and smoking at a very young age. Drinking alcohol can have its effects. Underage drinking in one’s teen years, can lead to reduced coordination, slurred speech, and intense mood swings. The worst-case scenario is falling into a coma or dying. Alcohol can also spark another ugly side effect, when drunken behavior turns abusive or violent. Drugs can change the way the body functions. Any alters to it can seriously damage one’s health.
