Past, Present, and Future LaShawna Forbes PSY202 Instructor: Richard Hassler July 9, 2012 The type of past that I have I am proud of all of my achievements. I have learned a lot from my trials and tribulations. I am the oldest of four children. I have a sister and two brothers. I had a good childhood, even though my father left the home when I was four years old. As long as I could remember we always lived with my grandmother. When I was eight years old my mom was in a bad car accident, which led to her having amnesia. I had a difficult time trying to cope with this illness. A part of me died knowing that my mom was mentally ill. She started getting her memory back a couple years later. I was about fifteen years old when I noticed the change in my mom. She would be gone for days without anyone knowing where she was. I thank God for having my grandmother in my life to take care of us. Even though my mom was hardly in my life I never gave up on pursuing my high school diploma. I was an honor student and I was on the math team. “Our environment plays a huge role in how we develop, what pathways are open to us, and which are closed. The multiple influences of the environment (nurture) over many years are largely responsible for shaping us into the unique individuals that we are. But it is not the only influence. We are also shaped by our genes, by nature.” (Witt & Mossler, 2010). My grandmother became ill right before I graduated from high school in 2001. I had to take care of my brothers and sisters. Ever since I can remember I always wanted to be a nurse, since it came natural because I was helping my grandmother with her breathing treatments, cleaning, and cooking for her.
