Past Formal or Informal Language Learning Experiences

My mother tongue is Manipuri, which we speak in our society. When I joined school which was a Christian Missionary School, English was the medium of education, all the core subjects were taught in English but not much emphasis was given to the English as a language. When I was in the fifth grade, the second language opted by my parents was Manipuri. During that time I started listening to the songs of Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Dean Martin, and I like them so much but I could not understand many of their songs as my English was not good. So in high school, I opted for Alternative English as my second language where I was able to improve my pronunciation, accent and syllable stress. Over the years, my understanding of the practical aspects of English has improved, but then I still had some confusion with my S and SH and also in pronouncing ’ASK’, the K used to come before the S. So I decided to undergo a formal training of train the trainer program and attained greater knowledge of English. I find formal learning is intentional, organized and structured, and arranged by institution which includes credit courses programs through community colleges and universities. There are learning objectives and expected outcomes however informal learning is never organized and is often thought of experiential learning. It often lacks intention and objectives. And this formal training enhances my public speaking skills, presentations and ever since then I have been able to understand the differences in the various accents and their regions and further improve my English grammar.
