Observers in the town remark how the once-beautiful Delia has lost her shine because of her abusive husband. A practical joker, Sykes scares Delia fifteen years by using her fear of snakes. Delia has come to the conclusion that she does not need Sykes nor his abuse, particularly considering it is her wages that paid for their home. Sykes is a stereotypical abusive husband. He physically and mentally abuses Delia, takes her income while failing to make his own, and has an affair on the side.
He tried to save his wife from the humiliation and the torture she was about to endure, but she made it very clear through her trial how she felt about him. “‘I have my own man?” Mu glanced at her husband and smirked. She straightened up and said, “My man is nothing. He is no good, I mean in bed. He always comes before I feel anything.’” She treats her husband poorly in front of the whole town, even after he tried to help her out.
Both were wrongfully terminated for those legitimate complaints. In each case a judge ruled that the termination was wrongful due to legitimate safety concerns, however both still have negative marks on their files in the background screening firm USIS and their Drive-A-Check (DAC)division. Even after speaking with a DAC representative, it is unclear whether Mr. Carter or Mr. Griffith will ever have the negative remarks removed from their records. In 2001 Ingrid Morales was fired from her job as a makeup artist at Saks Fifth Avenue. After she was listed with USIS as having "unauthorized taking of merchandise” on her record, she sued the screening firm.
While the neighbors believed her due to her storytelling skills and because the brother-in-law, Ning, was single, Ning was soon brought to jail. Because he was sure of his right, he refused, but unfortunately no one believed him and soon received death penalty. On the other hand, Miss Shi was granted $100,000 in cash. Not long after, she had an affair with a monk and was brought to attention to the court; she received a beating and soon passed away. From this story, it is obvious that Miss Shi was wrong and had caused death upon a righteous man.
Emily instantly fell in love. She even bought him a silver toilet set with his initials on it to almost buy his love, but as time passed they had still not married. Once Emily found out that Homer was not the marrying type, she went out and killed him so he would always belong to her, “The body had apparently once lain in the attitude of an embrace, but now the long sleep that outlasts love, that conquers even the grimace of love, had cuckolded him” (Faulkner) as the narrator states. Emily had acted irrationally in order to keep what she had always desired. On the other hand, in The Jilting of Granny Weatherall by, Porter, Granny Weatherall had also been rejected by her lover, George.
His willingness to slaughter the man for so weak a reason is frightening though. It helps to show how twisted Chillingworth truly is. During the end of the novel though, Dimmesdale thwarts Chillingworth’s revenge plot by telling the Puritan community how he had an affair with Hester. This act absolutely ruins Chillingworth because he no longer possesses the power over Dimmesdale. All the horrible acts he had done in the past were undone, because Dimmesdale "Hast escaped me!"(228).
Eric admits that he was responsible for getting her pregnant and had offered £50.00 from his dad’s office but that she had refused and told Eric that she did not want to see him again. Eventually when it becomes known that the inspector is a fraud, the Birlings are forced to look at their actions and treatment of Eva Smith/Daisy Renton. The younger Birlings are able to accept that their actions may have had bad consequences with Shiela acknowledging that there are more Eva Smiths/Daisy Rentons out there whereas the older Birlings are in denial of any responsibility or wrongdoing with Mr Birling excusing his behaviour on the grounds that there was no real inspector therefore no real harm had been done which leads Sheila to say to her father and mother that “it’s you two who are being childish, trying not to face the facts”. “An Inspector Calls” by J.B.Priestley is a great play with a very strong moral message running through it. The play conveys the notion of responsibility within society to the reader very clearly through demonstrating actions and
When the townspeople discover the remains of Homer Barron locked away in Miss Emily’s bedroom after her death, we see that Miss Emily ultimately rejected the values of her culture. This is true not only in rejecting its values on dating or marriage but also those disdaining murder. In this way Miss Emily rejects the rigid values that have ruled most of her life. As Dilworth (1999) maintains, “By entering a love affair with Homer Barron, Emily briefly rebelled against southern values and then, by ending her affair with him, at least as far as the townspeople were concerned, she conformed again to those values” (p. 251). In contrast, the narrator does not want to shoot the elephant but ultimately does.
