Park Protection For many years, we have been successful in preventing crime from happening in our park, thereby making it one of the safer areas within the city. It is my belief that the park in our little town has survived because of the area it is located in. Lancaster County’s Municipal Park is located directly on the left side of our police department in a very well lit area. Centrally located in the heart of the city, the residents living within the area are the eyes and ears for the police and park personal and report any problems that may arise. The lighting for the Municipal Park is adequate for those participating in activities or the neighbors across the street to get a clear view of someone who may be a threat. The landscaping, maintained by the City employees is set up so that it does not block the view of park attendees, the officers of the police department or anyone within 15 feet of the park. Lights are placed strategically in the park to allow nighttime activities, although these activities are scheduled in clusters; restricted areas are blocked by a fence and the lighting eliminates for miles. The walkways are well lit to enhance visibility at night even though the overhead lights are there. Principle access routes to the park are properly identified and the visitors are encouraged to use them because any potential hiding areas are visible during nighttime hours. Improvements made to the sight lines and having officers stationed in a specific area has made using the nighttime routes to the park safer. Clear sight lines are important as they allow people to see without interference, what lies ahead. In our park it is possible to see most of the park and the extended play area from the adjourning streets.
