Children today are becoming felons at a very early age. They are committing crimes that most adults would never dream of. There are six year olds with guns and twelve year olds carrying out mass murders. The first question on most people’s minds is where do these children get these ideas or weapons? The initial reflex is to blame the parents, who are supposed to be controlling their kids. In most cases that would be the appropriate response in my opinion. There are numerous things that parents are obligated to do to prevent their children from committing crimes. When two people have a child they automatically take on a seventeen year liability. Starting from a young age parents control everything about a child’s life, from what to wear to bedtimes. Some parents abandon their duties and basically let the child grow up on their own. This is not only careless but can be destructive to a young person’s development. Some parents don’t realize the repercussions of deserting their responsibilities. Children are the future and they are capable of anything. There is always an exception to the rule but mainly parents are responsible for what their children say and do. Every parent has an obligation to deter their children from committing crimes and can do so with boundaries. Most people believe that parents should be held liable for the things that their children do. “While parents cannot be found criminally liable for the acts committed by their children, they can be found civilly liable if their own negligence has made it possible or easier for their children to harm others” (Should We,820). It seems that parents don’t realize what their child is capable of until they are being taken to court.
