Like his disciples, many of us struggle to understand how Jesus fulfilled the prophets. “The parables help those who receive Jesus’ word in faith to understand the nature of the kingdom as it appears in Jesus (Bartholomew & Goheen, p.146). A parable uses familiar scenes to explain a deeper spiritual truth. Jesus uses the parable of the unforgiving servant to teach us to appreciate His forgiveness and to extend forgiveness to those who have sinned against us. By using Stein’s principles for interpreting parables, Jesus uses the parable of the unforgiving servant to teach us to appreciate His forgiveness and to extend forgiveness to those who have sinned against us. It serves to teach simply how God is forgiving, merciful and just; and how we must be as well. We learn to apply this in all our relationships; it is necessary to forgive in order to be forgiven. The parable of the Unforgiving Servant is told by Jesus to his disciples when they ask about forgiveness. In the parable, the king decides to bring his accounts up to date; thus, calls all his servants to pay their debt. One of the servants brought before him, owed ten thousand talents. Since he could not pay, the king orders him to be sold for his debt along with his family and all he had. The man falls to the ground asking the king to be patient, he would pay it all. Feeling pity for him, the king releases him, and forgives his debts. After leaving the king, this man goes to see a fellow servant who owes him a hundred denarii. Grabbing the servant by the throat and the man demands instant payment. The servant falls down before him, asking for a little more time. His creditor would not wait. He has the man arrested and
