Week 2 Assignment 2 Web Quest The Bhanjo Lesson (1893) by: Henry Ossawa Tanner Tanner, Henry Ossawa. Hampton University Museum, VA. A graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, African-American painter Henry Ossawa Tanner based his painting, The Banjo Lesson (1893), on a poem by Paul Lawrence Dunbar. Convinced that his race would inhibit his career in the United States, Tanner moved to Paris in 1895, where he enjoyed a successful career as a painter, primarily of religious scenes. This is one of the most beautiful and simple paintings and most popular of Tanner. In this painting above, we can notice the simplistic color value and the rough texture that is concealed inside the shapes.
Giotto Di Bondone was an Italian painter in the middle ages who is known to the art world as one of the first painters who kick started the Renascence style of painting. This essay will focus on Giotto and how he changed the face of art in his time; the style he rejected, his influences, the style he created, and his achievements. Byzantine is Rejected While the style of Byzantine had been thriving since the 6th century, partially due to the hierarchical religious implications, the paintings themselves were lacking something that Giotto was willing to bring to the table. What was missing was the principle of depth, as all of the Byzantine artwork that was being produced was flat and perspective simply was not implied. Byzantine art relied on heavy line work and vibrant colours to capture the viewer.

Gianlorenzo Bernini was an Italian artist born December 7,1598 in Naples he is considered the greatest sculptor and architect of the 17th century.Bernini created the Baroque style of sculpture and in my opinion definitely mastered this style above any one who may have even attempted before or after his era. Bernini's career began under his father, Pietro Bernini, a Florentine sculptor with some talent nothing in comaparison to Gianlorenzo who moved to Rome.Bernini, “a young prodigy“, soon established himself as a independent sculptor. He was strongly influenced by his studies of antique greek and roman marbles in the Vatican, and he waa also very knowledgable of High Renaissance paintings of the early 16th century. The early works of Gianlorenzo caught the attention of Annibale Carracci, Pope Paul V, Scipione Cardinal Borghese, a member of the reigning papal family, and Pope Urban VIII who turned out to be his greatest patron. While Bernini was under Scipione Cardinal Borghese patronage he carved what is known as his first important life-size sculptural which was in groups like a series that showcased his work in levels of progression.

He then spent the next six years with Verrocchio and by the time he was twenty he was qualified as a master in the guild of artists and doctors of medicine. Symbol, Theme and Depiction in Jacques-Luis David’s The Oath of the Horatii There are many paintings that stand out in the canon of art and art history. Jacques-Luis David’s neoclassical painting, The Oath of the Horatii, is one such painting. It is many things: a comment of family versus state, a merging of cultures and a political statement. It is important to study because of its many different comments and the true depth of its message about war, family, violence and culture.
