P3: Describe the investigations that are carried out to enable the diagnosis of these physiological disorders A service user would usually visit their GP if they suspect something is wrong with them; there are several different stages that would be followed prior to a diagnosis being reached. There are three types of referrals which can enable a service user to be a diagnosed Self-referral is when a patient refers themselves to health care professional, usually this is their GP. Professional referral is when a person goes to their GP and undergoes general tests, is examined after describing their symptoms and if their GP is concerned about their health, the GP will then make a referral to a specialist professional, for example a hospital doctor to see the patient immediately. The patient will then go on to see the doctor and then may go onto different specialists once a diagnosis has been made or is suspected. Another type of referral is third party referral. This happens when family or friends decide that someone they know should be seen by a health professional or if a patient goes to their opticians and the optician notices something wrong and writes to the service users GP as the examination may suggest a condition such as diabetes. There are many tests that a person undergoes if they or a medical professional suspect that they have a physiological disorder. The tests are suited to the physiological disorder that they have or are suspected to have. When a patient is taking these tests they will be asked about their medical history. This is important as it may indicate any previous conditions which may have had an effect on the current disorder they have. This stage should not be rushed as it is important in the diagnosis of the person, the doctor will investigate patterns based on the information the patient is giving about medical history and family
