Effective communication is more than just talking; it includes gestures, body languages, facial expressions, body postures, formal, informal etc. Effective communication in a health and social care environment plays a big role, in that, without effective communication skills, service users, employees, employers or even teachers and students of a health and social care environment would find it difficult to communicate with whomever they wanted to communicate with. It would be impossible to work without communication skills in a health and social care environment in that, we have many reasons to communicate in a health and social care environment and it is essential for communication to take place without misunderstanding or even been misunderstood. It might be that the individual’s that we work with, may barriers to effective communication e.g. language barriers, a person with speech difficulties who may have suffered as stroke etc. Therefore effective communication skills can be applied in such situations such as listening skills, explaining skills etc. In a group discussion for example, there are certain aspects that people should follow to make people feel welcome and warm to join in the group, this is where group members and group leader can use their effective communication skills. Examples are simple things that would make everyone want to join that particular group e.g. sitting in a circle to make sure everyone is comfortable and able to hear what other’s are saying and for them to also contribute. However, if the group member’s and the group leader lacks this effective communication skills, then the bad setting or standing positions will make the group communication much harder, thus encouraging people to evacuate that group and join other groups.
