Topic : Ozone Depletion Purpose : To persuade my audience not to use harmful materials that will cause ozone to deplete and ways to prevent it. Thesis Statement : Our action have cause ozone to deplete day by day and various action can be taken to stop this problem. Introduction : Did you all know that approximately 20 to 30 kilometres away from the earth’s surface is a thin layer of gas forming just a small proportion of the earth’s atmosphere, without which harmful radiation emitted from the sun would wipe out every living thing on this very planet? This very thin layer of gas is called the ozone layer, which absorbs 97 percent to 99 percent of the Sun’s ultraviolet rays. At this very day, due to our ignorance and selfishness, the ozone layer is depleting and we are slowly destroying ourselves day by day. I believe there is a problem with us, humans. We are the culprits that contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer. Many of our daily actions can cause the ozone to deplete. Let’s take an example like the usage of insecticides. Unintentionally, by using that can of insect spray every day to get rid of the unwanted mosquitoes could cause the ozone to deplete due to the emission of deadly industrial gases called chlorofluorocarbons (CFC). Furthermore, chlorofluorocarbons can be found in the coolants used in refrigerators and air-conditioners. According to the analysis carried out by the United Nations Statistics Division in 2000, our country, Malaysia, have a total of 4,777,576 households. Let’s say approximately around 2 million household is equipped with an air-conditioner, can you imagine the amount of chlorofluorocarbons we are producing every single day and the amount of damage we have done to our ozone layer?
