------------------------------------------------- Essay on the short story ”Owl” “There are good ships and wood ships, ships that sails the sea. But the best ships are friendships, may they always be.” A friendship is one of the most valuable things in life. It’s both important and fantastic to have people to share memories, experiences and happiness with in life. In the short story “Owl” written by Jackie Kay in 2012, we hear the story two middle-aged ladies, who are sitting together and talking about past, presence and life in general. This paper will study the novel’s narrative technique and use of contrasts. The short story “Owl” is told by a reliable 1st person narrator. It is told from the middle-aged main character Anita’s (nickname Barn’s) point of view, which makes the story more personal. The reason why it’s easier to relate a 1st person narrator is because you could think of her as a storyteller who talked directly to you. You could argue that the 1st person narrator is limited to Barn, but that wouldn’t be 100% true, since Barn knows Marion/Tawn (her best friend) so well. Also because of the fact that they think almost identically (p.3 l. 73-74), “I wasn’t even surprised any more when Tawn and I thought about the same thing at the same time; we’d been doing that for years.” The fact that they compare their friendship to “Starsky and Hutch” (the two policemen from the who are best friends) also shows their close friendship. We don’t get any direct descriptions of any of the characters, but they’re described by what they say and what they do. For example Barn describes Tawn’s personality by commenting on one of her wise quotes: “After a while, I don’t think you connect any name to anything any more. It just is, Tawn said. She had this way of explaining everything so that everything made perfect sense.” Barns mind changes between past and presence.
