Society’s Dependency on Computers Over the past few years, computers have gone from being a rare luxury to an everyday necessity. Computers are now taking over our world and forcing humans to become overwhelmingly dependent on them. The computer has brought benefits to the world; however, this tremendous dependency can cause many negative effects. The overpowering dependence on computers can cause computer addiction, allows cyber crimes to occur, and is currently replacing manufacturing jobs. Although computers have opened new doors, negative impacts of computer dependency far outweigh any positives. Excessive computer dependency can cause computer addiction which is currently a serious medical condition. Research has shown that over use of computers can cause this disorder and usually requires professional treatment. Computer addiction can cause a person to experience negative psychological, physical and social effects. According to Wieland (2005), computer addiction is a form of obsessive-compulsive disorder and can cause many effects including: experiencing a compulsive desire to use the computer, experiencing euphoria while using the computer, denial of the problem, inability to control the behavior, issues with family and friends due to the addiction, and feeling anxious and depressed when unable to use the computer. In order to receive treatment, a person would have to see a professional and agree on a treatment plan such as cognitive behavioral therapy, psychopharmacology, or addiction treatment and self help groups (p. 154-160). Society is currently facing multitudinous types of addictions which are putting a toll on our country and adding a new addiction to these can slowly destroy America. While computers continue to become more common, there needs to be a major decrease of computer dependency before computer addiction becomes our future epidemic and
