Overcoming Religious Discrimination Many business leaders will discriminate consciously or subconsciously. Discrimination has been ingrained into our society and beliefs throughout history. The only way that a person can learn not to discriminate is through proper education about the facts surrounding the issue. When 9-11 devastated the United Stated, many Americans began, if not already, to discriminate against all Muslims. This discrimination included anything foreign to Americans, such as turbans, women dressing to completely conceal themselves, except for their eyes, or the words Quran or Islam. The only way to overcome any discrimination is to investigate and research the facts about the issue before making a decision. The Islamic faith has been around for many centuries, just as Christianity and Judaism. The term Muslim simply describes a person of the Islamic faith and therefore Muslim is not a religion, but a person and Islam is that person’s faith. The word ‘Islam’ in Arabic means submission and the word ‘Allah’ means God. One “fifth of the world’s population” is of the Islamic faith (Islamic). Muslims believe in One God, the Angels, the prophets, the Day of Judgment, and in “God’s complete authority over human destiny and in life after death” (Islamic). Muslims even believe in Jesus. However, Muslims also believe that the prophet Muhammad received God’s final message to man through the Angel, Gabriel (Islamic). Muhammad is the grandson of Abraham in the Bible. Muslims believe that Abraham settled in what today is known as “Makkah, and built the Ka’ba towards which all Muslims turn when they pray” (Islamic). According to the Islamic traditions, “God commanded Abraham to summon all mankind to visit this place, and when pilgrims go there today they say 'At Thy service, O Lord', in response to Abraham's summons” (Islamic).
