Year 11 Portfolio Task In this essay it’s discussing how the theme the outsider is being portrayed in this novel and also in the blind side, the film through certain techniques. These techniques that will be portraying the theme are symbolism, hyperbole, Irony and repetition. These will points for the novel “The Outsider”. Techniques that will portray the theme for The Blind Side will be contrast, symbolism and close up shot, which is a film technique. Through all of these techniques, they will show us how the outsider is being portrayed in it but also through the characters, which is Holden and Michael. The Outsider Firstly, the theme of the outsider is portrayed through Salinger’s use of symbolism. For example, this is shown when Holden wears his hunting hat. “…I put on this hat that I’d bought in New York that morning. It was this red hunting hat, with one of those very, very long peaks.” This use of symbolism obviously shows us that Holden likes to wear the hunters hat but also that he makes himself an outsider for doing so. Salinger shows us through symbolism Holden is an outsider and makes himself one. Salinger makes us see that Holden is an outsider but he is making him one because of wearing that hunter’s hat. Therefore Salinger employs symbolism to show us that the hunter’s hat is making him an outsider. Secondly, the theme of the outsider is portrayed through Salinger’s use of hyperbole. For example, this is shown when Holden states, “You’ve thought I wanted to marry them or something.” The emphasizing of “marry” clearly demonstrates the technique of hyperbole. We feel that she is an idiot/ shallow “phony.” Why Holden is an outsider is because he sometimes behaves in unexpected manner as shown here. Therefore, Salinger shows hyperbole through Holden to demonstrate how Holden thinks how mature he is and smarter than everyone else. Thirdly,
