Name: Elisa Vaselli Date: 10-2-2012 Class: Modern History Word Count: 1,072 Stage 2 Modern History 2012 – 100 WORD ESSAY “Was it one incident that started the outbreak of WWI or was there many?” World War one was a major war that began on the 28th of July 1914 and lasted until November the 11th 1918. It was centered in Europe, fought by many countries and was considered an extremely bloody war. There were many incidents that occurred before this time that triggered the beginning of the war. These include; the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, Mutual Defense Agreements, Imperialism, Nationalism and Militarism. These events were the reason why WWI started and went for so long. During this essay I will be discussing in detail about the above events that started the outbreak of World War one. The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was considered the spark that initiated the eruption of World War one. On the 28th of June 1914 Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophia was assassinated by a Serbian terrorist, named Gavrilo Princip while visiting Sarajevo in Bosnia. His assassination was in protest to Austria-Hungary having control of Bosnia Herzegovina, a region that Serbia wanted control. Before the archduke assassination, he was heir to be the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Franz Ferdinand was however very unpopular because he proposed that once he had become Emperor, he would make changes that the people of Bosnia did not like. Bosnia/ Herzegovina were controlled by Austria-Hungary and they had axed Bosnia in 1908 which became an issue for the Bosnian people. This was the reason as to why the archduke was despised. One month after the assassination of Franz, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia and soon after the alliances; imperialism, militarism and nationalism all came into play.
