The major transformation used by ‘O’ director Tim Blake Nelson in his adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello into ‘O’, was modernising the subjects of Shakesperean everyday life which includes jealousy, racism and false impression vs reality, which is evident through the character of Hugo/Iago. Evidently, the major change is setting which is radically different in both texts. Shakespeare set Othello in Venice which is appropriate because at the time it was a place filled with corruption and racial tension. Othello was a Moor with dark skin so audiences of the Elizabethan period would be familiar with the context. If it were set in another, less racist setting, audiences would not understand the criticism. Tim Blake Nelson, set the film ‘O’ in a private high school in the south. Nelson modernises the plot of Othello and then sets it in a modern high school which connected due to the african-american slavery history of America’s South as well as Odin being the only African American at the school, much like Othello being the only dark-skinned man with social status in the play. Another benefit of using a high school was that a high school is like a microcosm, a mini representation of the world. Also, by choosing a high school basketball team trying to win the finals, in the modern-era, sports treated as a form of “war” which was also derived from the play’s war with the Turks.

Throughout both texts, a variety of techniques have been used. In Othello, the major technique used was ‘soliloquy’, a character speaks to themself, relating their thoughts and feelings and sharing them with the audience. Iago is viewed as a Machiavellian, characterised by deception and dishonesty, character.
