Osteoarthritis Are you having joint pain that increases with activity and improves with rest? Definition Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder, which is due to aging and wear and tear on a joint.It is a chronic condition characterized by the breakdown of the joint’s cartilage which causes the bones to rub against each other, causing stiffness, pain and loss of movement in the joint. Prevalence Estimated 27 million Americans live with OA. It is the number one cause of disability in America. The symptoms of OA usually appear in middle age, and almost everyone has symptoms by age 70. Before age 55, condition occurs equally in both sexes. However,after 55 it is more common in women. Anatomy of the synovial joint * Cartilage is the firm, rubbery tissue that cushions your bones at the joints, and allows bones to glide over one another. * If the cartilage breaks down and wears away, the bones rub together. This causes pain, swelling, and stiffness. * Bony spurs or extra bone may form around the joint. The ligaments and muscles around the joint become weaker and stiffer. Often, the cause of OA is unknown. It is mainly related to aging. PAIN- in a joint during or after the use, or after a period of inactivity. Tenderness- in the joint when you apply light pressure Stiffness- in a joint that may be most noticeable when patient wake up in the morning Loss of flexibility-may make it difficult to use the joint Grating
