Jason Wojcik Lab 1: Osmosis Purpose The purpose of this lab is to familiarize you with osmosis, and specifically, what happens to cells when they are exposed to solutions of cells of different tonicities. Hypothesis By increasing the amounts of sugar to the water in the baggies, the movement of the water in the baggies will increase. Materials Scale Lunch baggies* 4 coffee cups 3 20 Oz containers sugar rubberbands scissors 250 mL measuring cup small pot 4 transfer pipettes Procedure 1. 4 baggies were put into each coffee cup for about 2 hours. A. 5 grams of sugar was added to the 250mL measuring cup and then the water was added and mixed. The contents were then poured into a pot. An additional 250mL of water was put into the pot as well and heated until the sugar was dissolved. The solution was removed, poured into a container, and labeled 1% solution. B. Add 100 grams of sugar to the 250mL measuring cup and then the water was added and mixed. The contents were then poured into a pot. An additional 250mL of water was put into the pot as well and heated until the sugar was dissolved. The solution was removed, poured into a container, and labeled 20% solution. C. Add 250 grams of sugar to the 250mL measuring cup and then the water was added and mixed. The contents were then poured into a pot. An additional 250mL of water was put into the pot as well and heated until the sugar was dissolved. The solution was removed, poured into a container, and labeled 1% solution. 2. Simulated cells using the baggies were created by tieing a rubber band around the end. 3. Use friction at the other end to open and fill the baggy to approximetly 75% with one of the solutions indicated below using the transfer pipet, and seal the open end with another rubber band.
