Explain how you determined this. Pyrite hypothesis accept/reject = I would reject as there was no change. Coal hypothesis accept/reject = I would accept as ph was indeed higher Based on your data, what effect do you predict coal mining has on the environment? Answer = I would say coal mining increases acidity in the environment. What can be done to prevent mine drainage from damaging the ecosystem?
The separation of cyclohexene could not depend on distillation alone. The method used in our experiment is one way that we could employ to separate azeotropes into its constituents. By adding a chemical that could form complex with one of the component, in our case, CaCl2 forms complex with water,
Lab 4 – Energy Sources and Alternative Energy Experiment 1: The Effects of Coal Mining |Table 1: pH of Water Samples | |Water Sample |Initial pH |Final pH (after 48 hours) | |Pyrite |.6pH |.7pH | |Activated Carbon |.6pH |.8pH | |Water |.6pH |.7pH | POST LAB QUESTIONS 1. Develop hypotheses predicting the effect of pyrite and coal (activated carbon) on the acidity of water? a. Pyrite hypothesis = If pyrite is added to water, then the acidity of the water is neutral. b. Coal (activated carbon) hypothesis = If coal or activated carbon is added to water then the acidity of water is basic.
Coal (activated carbon) hypothesis = If coal is added to water, then the water will become more acidic. 2. Based on the results of your experiment, would you reject or accept each hypothesis that you produced in question 1? Explain how you determined this. a. Pyrite hypothesis accept/reject = I rejected my hypothesis because there was no change in the pH levels after testing with a pH strip.
Riya Singh Banita Sathpathy Period 1 Analysis of a Commercial Bleach Purpose The purpose of this experiment is to determine the amount of sodium hypochlorite in commercial bleach by reacting the bleach with sodium thiosulfate. Procedure In this experiment a solution of sodium thiosulfate of known concentration will be added to the bleach using a buret in a titration procedure. The disappearance of the dark blue color of the starch- iodine complex will signal the end point. Data Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3 Initial Reading (ml) 0 0 0 Final Reading (ml) 35.7 36.0 36.6 Volume of Na2S2O3 35.7 ml 36.0 ml 36.6 ml Calculations and Analysis 2 S2O3-2 = I3- = I2 = ClO- Therefore looking at the equation above, we can conclude that for every mole of sodium thiosulfate we need half a mole of sodium hypochlorite. (35.7+36+36.6)/3=36.1 ml is the average volume of the Na2S2O3.

Develop hypotheses predicting the effect of pyrite and coal on the acidity of water? a. Pyrite hypothesis = If pyrite is added to with 100mL of water, it will decrease the pH over 48 hours. b. Coal hypothesis = If activated carbon is added with 100mL of water, it will increase the pH over 48 hours.
Osmotic pressure, one of the colligative properties previously discussed, is defined as the pressure used by the water flow through a membrane separating two solutions with different concentrations of various solutes. The purpose of this lab was to assist in the educating one upon the freezing points of a pure solvent compared to that of a solvent found within a nonvolatile solute, while at the same time understanding and gaining a greater depth of osmosis. I greatly enjoyed this lab, although I wish it could have been conducted in less time. Observations: I took note of several components of the lab conducted. The dialysis tubing was one I especially monitored, checking every hour with recordings.
Australia has recently signed to Kyoto Protocol which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emission by 4 million tonnes becoming 2010. Companies have improved scrubbers, which clean sulfur from the smoke before it leaves the smokestack. Awareness is growing when considering pollution from coal. Here in Australia while we are monitoring carefully the atmospheric pollution caused by coal burning it can be stated categorically that Carbon dioxide emissions from vehicles have far more reaching effects than the pollution created from coal. Coal will continue to be used extensively in Australia because of it's abundance.
When an indicators color changes it shows the presence of an organic compound. The purpose of using distilled water as one of the substances is that it is the control so you can see the differences. Also, in the substances distilled water was mixed in with them. The control group in part C is distilled water. The purpose of washing the test tubes thoroughly is so the chemicals don’t cross contaminate and affect the outcome of another section of the lab.
