Timeline Of The Origins Of Public Health The first national Public Health Act 1848 Edwin Chadwick was born in the 1800’s and was a lawyer in London, and during his studies he became very interested in political and social reform and began to research into these topics. Being a supporter of miasma theories, in the course of his investigations into the living conditions of the poor, Chadwick became interested in the problem of sanitation and was convinced that by improving the cleanliness, hygiene in our environment, poorer classes would be able to live more independent, healthier lives, and increase their life expectancy. 1854 -John Snow and the Broad Street Pump Removal. John snow was a leading British physician of the Victorian period, and was the man to make the first link to the cholera outbreak. Cholera had appeared into the scenes at the beginning of 1830, this is when epidemics started to appear. At this time cholera caused more deaths than the black plague, which directly attributed to the conditions of poverty and urbanization. At the time, it was assumed that cholera was airborne. His studies suggested a means of disease transmission that caused him to believe there was a contradiction to the miasma theory. Although overlooked at the time, his study would later be recognised as evidence for the germ theory of disease, which would come to prominence in the years after Snow’s death. After careful investigation, using plotting cases of cholera on a map of the area, recording the location of deaths, Snow was able to show that the majority were clustered around one particular public water pump in Broad Street, Soho. This lead Snow to eventually convincing the officials to remove the handle of the pump on the 8thSeptember 1854. This made the disease have a drastic decrease, however by that time the worst of the epidemic had actually passed.
