Between the 1920’s and the 1930’s the organized crime business was just becoming popular. After doing some research, it became apparent that the Jewish people in New York at the time played a vital role in organized crime at the time. It is because of people such as Meyer Lansky, Benny “Bugsy” Siegel, and Arnold Rothstein why we know organized crime today for what it is. They made it as we know it today. These people made it organized. If you watch The Godfather series or Goodfellas or Bugsy, the crime you see is what Jews made it. Most of the Jewish gangsters from the time actually grew up going to the synagogue and celebrating holidays and Sabbath but as they got older it got harder to have a respectable profession and make money, which left them with little choice but to find other ways of business.…show more content…
They had been involved in numerous illegal activities such as illegal drug dealing, prostitution, gambling, loan sharking as well as murder. They were feared and very powerful men at the time which almost allowed them to get away with anything. Growing up in neighborhoods like the Lower East Side, Brownsville, and Brooklyn meant they were prone to harsh environments which eventually lead to themselves being criminals. It is in these places where Jewish gangsterism was found. In a time where Jews had considered themselves blocked from certain professions, they had to find an alternative to make money.
