Boys & Girls Clubs of America Boys & Girls Club For over 150 years, clubs like Boys & Girls Clubs of America have been assisting children achieve their highest potential. In 1860 Boys & Girls Clubs of America began with three extraordinary women in Hartford, Conn: Elizabeth Hamersley, Alice Goodwin, and Mary Goodwin. The three women believed boys who wander the streets ought to have some constructive alternatives. The three women structured the first Boys Clubs, and a cause was birth. Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s mission is to allow every young person, mainly the children who need help to reach their potential as caring, responsible, and productive citizens. Boys & Girls Club gives a secure place to study, mature, and have continuing relationships with concerned fully developed professionals, offer life-changing programs that give opportunity and hope. Character growth has been the foundations of Boys & Girls Clubs since the opening of the first club in 1860. Involvement Boys & Girls Club is involved in making children’s lives grow to their fullest potential. They provide life enhancing programs and character development experiences (brclubs, 2012). Three areas that are focuses on are education and career, health and life skills, and sports fitness and recreation. The clubs are involved in education and career programs. These programs provide opportunities for career assessment and educational enhancement. Career Launch is provides for teens to explore careers, identify training or college requirements, seek out financial aid, and play skill-building games (brclubs, 2012). Money Matters is a financial literacy program to help teens learn how to manage their money. It helps provide skills that can help teens lead to financial independence.
