Organizational Leadership MGT 380 Shane Engle December 21, 2009 What is Leadership? Many people believe that leadership is the notion of simply being the most powerful, the strongest, the biggest, or simply being first. Leadership is defined in many different ways. One definition of leadership is that it is the process by which an individual exerts influence over other people by inspiring, motivating, and directing their activities to help contribute towards the effectiveness and success of the organization (Yukl, 2006, p. 21). Additionally, a leader is interpreted as someone who sets direction in an effort to influence people to follow that direction while possessing certain characteristics and traits. There are also numerous theories about leadership, or about carrying out the role of a leader. In this paper I will focus on those theories which include participative leadership, transformational leadership, path-goal theory, and transactional theory. Moreover, I will also discuss Business Leadership Theories such as Behavioral Theory, Contingency Theory, and Situational Leadership Theory. After taking this course and reading Yukl’s text, Leadership in Organizations, I have formed a much clearer understanding of what leadership entails and how to become an effective leader in any organization. Participative leadership is defined as when a leader, rather than making autocratic decisions, seeks to involve other people in the process. Participative leadership may also be referred to as power sharing, consultation, or joint decision and often times may possibly include peers, stakeholders, subordinates, or superiors in the decision making process. The level of participation may also depend on the type of decision being made. For instance, decisions on how to implement goals may be highly participative but the leader makes the final decision (Yukl, 2006).
