Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent (Clark). To be an effective leader, you need the employees of the organization to believe in you and therefore support your intentions. If you cannot influence or persuade the employees, chances are you will not reach your goal. If they will not follow you, then they will follow someone else. Like it or not, politics will get you where you want to be. If there is more then one way to accomplish a task, some form of politicking will be used to determine how the task will be done. This can be between two people or several thousand. Every organization has its own style of politics. It takes place on all levels of employees and management. If you want to be a successful manager, you have to understand the organizational politics and use them effectively to be a successful leader. In 1994, Ronald Clement took a look at three companies that required organizational changes for different reasons, General Motors, IBM, and Sears. They took a turn to fix their cultures in similar manners. General Motors has gone through several organizational changes before and after the rise of organization development consulting firms in the 1980s (Clement). Sears completely revamped their Human Resource department in the 1990s that stressed communications and education of the staff through the Sears University (Kirn, Rucci, Huselid, Becker). IBM needed to change with the evolving electronic market that required them to look internally to manage the new technology. To be successful, as these companies were to change their culture, Clement looked at upper management to wave the flag for what the company wanted.
