Option 3: ‘Organisations are rational. This means that management is just a matter of creating and sustaining a set of hierarchical work relationships’. Discuss. Organisations are rational. In order to come to this conclusion we have to first examine how an organisation is structured. We have to understand what an organisational structure is and also what are the features of that structure that makes the organisation rational. The two prominent characteristics of rational systems in organisations are firstly goal specificity and secondly formalisation. Goal specificity is that the organisation's goals are clearly defined and are not vague. Clear goals provide a solid basis for formal organisation. Formalisation for an organisation means that rules governing behaviour are precisely formulated to the extent that roles and role relations of positions in the organisation are prescribed independently of the persons occupying these positions. The opposite of the formal structure is the socio-metric structure which is the social cement that binds and regulates activities and interactions within informal groups. An organisational structure is set in place to define how job tasks within the organisation are formally divided, grouped and coordinated. Organisation structures can and do shape the attitudes and behaviours of the people working there. Three of the more common organisational designs are the simple structure, the bureaucratic structure and the matrix structure. The simple structure is characterised by a low degree of compartmentalisation, wide spans of control, centralised authority in a single person and little formalisation.
