Organizational behavior is the behavior of individuals in groups and in organizations. It is the study of social, personal, and behavior dynamics in organizations.(OB 4) It encompasses organizational variables that affect behavior at work and interdisciplinary influences, such as psychology, sociology, engineering, anthropology, management, and medicine. It is “based on scientific knowledge and applied practice. It involves the study of abstract ideas, such as valence and expectancy in motivation, as well as the study of concrete matters, such as observable behaviors and medical symptoms of distress at work.”(OB 20) In an over simplified term, it is understanding. Understanding what makes people do the things that they do, how people function in groups, what motivates them, and why they are the way they are. Organizational behavior is truly more than the sum of its parts. Each piece describes something different about people, but it is not until you put the pieces together that you can start to solve the puzzle that is human behavior. With a true working knowledge of OB, a manager’s opportunity to fulfill the potential of his subordinates is truly limitless. Knowing how to motivate or the best way to lead and manage the staff one is in charge of is essential to maximizing the surplus of the organization, which ultimately is the goal. No matter the challenges presented to one who understands OB, there is always a chance to succeed. “Some of the world’s greatest leaders, such as Winston Churchill, experienced dramatic failure before achieving lasting success. The key to their eventual success was their capacity to learn from the failure and to respond positively to the opportunities presented to them.”(OB 7) OB is not an answer to a question, a solution to a problem, or a light in the dark.
