Organisational Behaviour in Course Assignment by Jessica Mcevoy Answer Plan Explain and illustrate the main processes and problems in person perception. Critically evaluate the importance of an understanding of this social perception for modern day managers. Firstly perception is the way an individual sees or understands something. Whether this is a piece of art, a piece of music they’ve heard or something they ate, it’s how the perceiver interprets such information. However person perception is more focused on the way one perceives another ones behaviour, attitude and characteristics. There are no right or wrong perceptions but there can be complications with person perception within organisations. This essay will focus on the importance of understanding different theoretical views, as well as highlight the importance of these theories for modern day managers. Question 1 Essay Answer Person perception is the way we perceive people differently, formed very quickly with minimal information. Perceptions depend on the perceivers past experience, education and personality; it is also questioned in the text (McKenna. E pg 138) whether perceptions are” innate or learned “(Held &Hein 1963). The processing stages of perception are selecting, sorting and interpreting information, we choose what information we pay attention to and then interpret it. We select this information from the environment through our Selection inputs such as; sight, smell, taste, touch and what we hear. This information is then organised and selected. Each individual has a distinctive way of doing this; to finish we interpret the data and manipulate it to give us a meaning. However, person perceptions can be misinterpreted such as the Halo effect theory.
