Urban Organic Gardening Organic gardening within an urban community is a concept and practice that helps the local economy to grow, while at the same time helping the community to have healthy choices in food and helping to support local farmers. In this day and age, it is harder to produce food from large plots of land because water is not readily available. The water laws in Arizona prohibit the use of the large amounts of water that are necessary to run many large scale farming operations. Urban gardening has become necessary to promote health and self-sufficiency in a community. One solution to producing food and eating healthy out of your own garden is to practice the “U-Pick-Operation” or the “U-Pick” theory. U-Pick gardens are very simple and basic. They include growing anything from strawberries and raspberries to peppers and corn. One can grow just about any type of food in a small garden. When the growing season is complete, the food is harvested and the U-Pick operation can be very profitable. One of the biggest advantages of a U-Pick operation is that there is no longer the expense of a long harvest, which would be necessary if growing on a large plot of land. In a small, urban garden several types of crops can be grown which have the widest appeal to the consumers in the community. If several appealing crops are grown on a smaller plot of land, which can be easily tended, the garden will not be vulnerable to crop failures (Waterman 11). Community Supported Agriculture or CSA’s are examples of U-Pick operations that have come together to form a market. ‘Shares’ of a harvest are sold in the community, giving the farmers a sense of security and support for their work. The community benefits by gaining a greater sense of responsibility and connection to the food that is produced (Prescott). The concept of CSA’s did not begin in this country,
