CE G9800 Is Organic Agriculture Sustainable? If so then Why? Organic Agriculture is a type of farming that promotes the health of both consumers and the environment. Organic Agriculture is the only farming that goes against modern toxic farming methods, organic farming excludes the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, and genetic engineering. Wheras Modern agriculture relies on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, genetic engineering, and large-scale mechanization to produce maximum crop yields. Modern agriculture practices monoculture which leads to the widespread planting of a single crop and eventually Monoculture contributes to soil erosion and saps the soil of its fertility and also this famring methods utilizes all these hazardous materials. Organic agriculture employs other techniques that increases long-term soil fertility and prevents pest and diseases. They feed and build the soil with natural fertilizers; they protect crops against insects using natural insect predators. The organic agriculture market has grown exponentially because more consumers are becoming aware that organic farming is better for them and their environment. Even though consumers know the benefits of organic farming there is still a lot to be done because it cannot compete with large, industrial farming operations. To actually find out wether Organic is better than Conventional farming systems, an experiment was conducted by the Rodale Institute from 1981-2002. In this experiment three cropping systems were included ; conventional, animal manure and legume-based organic and legume based organic cropping systems. For this experment each of the three different types of cropping systems were replicated eight times so that the results could give us a proper and definite conclusion.
