One of the nursing theories most commonly used in practice is Orem’s theory. Dorothea Orem is one of America’s well-known nursing theorists. Orem’s theory guides nurses to assist in meeting self-care deficits whether based only on the cognitive or on the technical. Orem focused on capabilities or action and self-management. Orem’s purpose for developing the self-care framework includes: Trying to find the meaning of nursing and to develop a body of nursing knowledge based on research.
According to Alligood (2010), “the formation of a humanistic-altruistic system of values, the instillation of faith-hope, the cultivation of sensitivity to one’s self and to others, and the development of a helping-trusting relationship” (p. 113) are the four carative factors. Watson’s theory teaches the nurse how to search within herself to ask the question what is the true caring? Watson’s theory focuses on genuine nursing care that consists of respect and valuing another
The central focus of the profession of nursing is developed around the idea of providing different dimensions of care to individuals in need by use of science and an atmosphere conducive to promoting and maintaining health. As such, nurses must always take a holistic approach towards the care of their clients and in order to maintain the same approach among all clients; the metaparadigm of nursing was developed. The metaparadigm of nursing was first developed by Florence Nightingale and has since been adopted by all nursing professionals. This is a general concept that has developed over time to define the discipline of nursing. The structure for the knowledge of nursing was developed from the four concepts of this metaparadigm.
This paper will describe a core concept that can be found in two theories and describe their commonalities and how they can be applied to nursing practice. Dorothea Orem's theory used four related concepts: self care, self-care agency, therapeutic self-care demand and self-care deficit, and two nursing concepts: Nursing agency and nursing system. Her theory states that nursing has special concern for the person's need for self-care action and provision and maintenance of the action on a continual basis to sustain health, recover from disease, and cope with the effects of the disease. Orem's definition of nursing identifies the creativity and analysis of information that contributes to the development of nursing systems to assist the patient. The validation of the requirement of nursing is that the person cannot maintain health and be free from injury and disease, and have the quality of self-care (Green, 2011).

Professional Roles and Values Stacy Bouma Western Governors University Professional Roles and Values Nursing has become one of the most trusted professions in America. While the healthcare industry has continued to change, thus has transformed the roles of the Registered Nurse. With increasing responsibilities, and broadening of their scope of practice, nurses are being recognized as professionals and leaders in today’s healthcare system. (ANA, 2013). Dr. Nola Pender’s, Revised Health Promotion model was developed “To assist nurses in understanding the major determinants of health behaviors as a basis for behavioral counseling to promote healthy lifestyles” (Pender, 2011, p. 3). By learning what issues contribute to a patient’s health behavior choice, I can be more effective in helping the patient develop healthy choices. According to Pender (Pender, 2011), the set of variables for behavioral specific knowledge and affect have important motivational significance and these variables can be modified through nursing actions. The goal of the health promotion model is for patients to adopt health promoting behaviors. Pender theorizes that health promoting behaviors should result in improved health, enhanced functional ability and better quality of life at all stages of development (Pender, Murdaugh and Parsons,
(2010), Keegan et al. (2012) and Mhurchu et al. (2010) offer their own perspectives about the purpose of health promotion in nursing practice. They believe that the goal of the health promotion activities is to help one’s client to manage secondary conditions of their disabilities in the
Nursing research is a systematic inquiry designed to build knowledge on an important issue for nurses, with the aim of developing nursing education, practice and administration (Beck and Polit, 2006). ). The general agreement is that the best evidence comes from rigorous research (Beck and Polit, 2006). The growing use of EBP is fuelled by the increasing demand for accountability of actions, when carrying out safe and effective improvements within healthcare (Stevens, 2013). Throughout nursing it has become a pivotal role of the nurses to ensure that they are carrying out safe, effective person-centred care which is based on the current available evidence (Gordon and Watts, 2011).
(Johnson, Lasater, Hodson-Carlton, Siktberg, Sideras, & Dillard 2012). Learning from exemplary nurses is the key. It influences us to follow in their footsteps. A great nurse educator believes that more can always be done above and beyond the call of duty. As Tanner (2006) identified, there is a strong need for nurse educators to focus on clinical thinking in order to safely meet complex patient care situations in health care.
