The Optimal Way of Learning a Foreign Language Futurologists agree upon the fact that languages play an active key role for an individual’s career success. But what is the best way to learn a language? I hereby will investigate that extensive reading and writing in combination with conversation practice help strengthen the language skills of students. In case of a first-time learner, the person experiences feelings of exhilaration when a concept is understood or comprehension of a language began. However, these are often followed by moments of frustration and discouragement, noticing one’s own mistakes and fearing to never being able to understand and communicate effectively. Several approaches exist to avert potential frustration and increase people’s ability to succeed in learning a language. Of course, learning with books and filing systems in institutions are quite exhausting. And, as is said by linguists, the most efficient way to learn a language is the same as having learned the mother tongue. This can be achieved in groups, on a daily basis and above all by striving for happiness and fun. ‘Learning through speaking’ is perhaps one of the most frequently repeated devices for language learners. For most teachers is seems to be their main aim to make their students talk – as early and as much as possible. This does not at all support the argument of also using writing and reading for improvement. Additionally, recent linguists proved the fact that humans learn how to express themselves by imitating others. A person cannot use language properly without good guidance. Therefore, teachers who avoid speaking will not reach optimum results. Likewise, it is obvious that the language will finally sound more natural, if people try to adapt native speakers, which implies having had the chance to listen to natives before.
