A Million to One “Before your show, I was on the verge of taking my life.” This statement was a response to Oprah on her former show by a woman who no longer wanted to deal with the conflicts of her life. When most people think of how individuals communicate, values and attributes usually come to mind: their morals, their ability to influence others and how they give back to their community are usually displayed in their character. Undeniably, Oprah Winfrey and Gerald ‘Jerry’ Springer are both highly reputable individuals in the American society. However, their communication skills differ significantly. While Winfrey values empowerment, education and family, Springer ironically promotes immorality, foul language and the breakdown of the family structure. Oprah Winfrey, daughter of a domestic helper and a barber, was born into poverty and suffered many hardships. The harsh realities she encountered included being raped at age nine, becoming pregnant at age fourteen, and being unable to bear children thereafter. Even though she faced these realities, she did not allow that to stop her. Instead, she pursued a career, became the host of the Oprah Winfrey Show, and is presently the CEO for Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). Winfrey promotes the value of education in youth around the world. With her generous and compassionate heart, she successfully opened a school for disadvantaged, deprived, delinquent, and underprivileged girls. Her former show promoted self-empowerment for women and allowed for individuals to better themselves. Additionally, both her former show and present network promote building family structure to reduce the amount of dysfunctional families in the society today.
