Comment on the ending of Act 1. I really thought the end of act one was a very strange way to end the scene, with the children all calling the names of people from Salem working with the devil. To me it made no sense, and it left it too
When gods are denied worship, the natural hierarchies that govern human and divine life are upset. How are they upset in the works we read about Demeter? How are they upset in the Bacchae? What do the differences indicate about the place of Demeter and Dionysus in the Olympic pantheon? Metaneira reason that Demophoon has spent several nights in the fire without harm Demeter makes the crops fail in Sicily in Ovid's version HUBRIS—flaw in a character that causes him/her to commit their tragic mistake leading to their downfall; often this flaw is excessive pride HAMARTÍA—the mistake or misjudgment made by the main character; the word literally means "missing the mark" because usually one makes their fatal mistake based on an incomplete
The play by Arthur Miller, The Crucible, is full of irony, false accusations and ignorance. The townspeople of Salem are so blind to the truth that they let a group of teenage girls destroy half their town simply by making up stories and accusing others of being witches. These puritan people were so obsessed with cleansing their town of evil that they let that fear of witchcraft run their lives, this also makes it very easy for people to get what they want very easily, whether it be land or revenge, these people were corrupted. There are many conflicts throughout this story Thomas Putnam is a wealthy farmer in Salem he is also greedy, and holds a grudge against Francis Nurse for preventing Putnam’s brother-in-law from being elected to the office of minister. He wants the riches without the work.
Be all that you can be. After all, look at what the United States has accomplished.” (Loewen page 387) The history books leave out facts that do not paint our forefathers in a good light. The authors seem to try and mold the minds of the young people into believing that everything that has happened in United States history is moral and just. We would never believe that these “first settlers” would have been as cruel as to not only take advantage of the suffering of others but to also celebrate it. The Pilgrims did not happen upon Plymouth Rock.
So Pidgeon is saying that if he hadn’t been so hung up over his dream, and left when Nick told him to, Gatsby, would still be alive. He could make a better life for himself; make his fortune without being a bootlegger or whatever sketchy things he was involved in. Without being hung up over Daisy, he could have changed the world, like his dad believing he could of made a difference. He could have been the real Gatsby, not the pretend
Illusion of Being Well Liked Through the character Jay Gatsby, Scott Fitzgerald disproves the idea that money can buy happiness, friendship and love. Through the actions of Gatsby, Fitzgerald portrays the idea that wealth cannot buy happiness. Gatsby having all the money in the world, still does not make him happy. Even though he has nice clothes, a car, a mansion and good looks he still is unhappy because a life with Daisy was his main goal and he never reached it. Trying to show off all of his possessions didn't impress her, but made her feel sad.

A large portion of the world disagrees with that statement and argues that he, in fact, did NOT “discover” America and that he should not be credited for that. Primarily, Christopher Columbus did not add any additional information to European knowledge. He was not the first to find the New World and he did not prove the Earth was round. According to research, Europeans at the time knew the world was round, not flat. Of course,
American doesn’t mean we listen to rock, eat burgers and drink beer all day, or are of a certain color because it is not correct or accurate and we do not have the right to say otherwise. America is the most multicultural place on this planet with different customs and religious events. And that is what America is striving for: to be different. Being an American is only about being born here or getting a green card and nothing
Weil speaks upon the necessity to obey our conscience naturally because it is the right thing to do. In “Necessity and Obedience” Weil says that “If we suspend the fillingup activity of the imagination and fix our attention on the relationship of things, a necessity becomes apparent which we cannot help obeying.” (Weil 96). Weil is simply saying that if we stop focusing on objects and things that benefit our needs, we will experience pure satisfaction doing good deeds for those around us with no yearn for rewards or praise from others. In contrary to Weils belief, the grandmother acts upon “necessity” much more selfishly than Weil. “I couldn’t answer to my conscience if I did” (O’Connor 1), is an important line in O’Connor’s story because it is the first time that the grandmother reveals her selfish intentions and manipulative personality.
