OSI Model History, Concepts and Goals. Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) Model What is the OSI Model, what is it history, why and who created the OSI Model? These are all questions I will explain in detail in this term paper. The OSI Model was developed in the late 1970’s by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). “The model is known as ISO OSI reference model because it relates with connecting open systems-that is, systems that are open for communication with other systems” (Anonymous tech-faq, 2011). The OSI model is an international standard that illustrates how data communication should take place. It governs the flow of communication by dividing the process into seven groups, called layers. These processes integrate the protocol standards developed by the ISO who was inspired by other organization such as, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and International Telecommunications Union (ITU). “The 7 layer OSI Model is an extremely detailed diagram describing organization of data; addressing schemes to explain the logistics…it is now used as a standard…” (Erdman, 2006). Each of the seven layers explains what protocol and standards specifically happen. The layers of the OSI Model are split up in two groups. The upper four layers are used when a message passes from one user to the next. The lower three are used for the communication through the host computer. “Control is passed from one layer to the next, starting at the application layer in one station, and proceeding to the bottom layer, over the channel to the next station and back up the hierarchy.” (Petri, 2009). Since the development and for the past 40 years, the OSI model has the support of most computer and network vendors, many big companies, most foreign governments including the United States.
